New London's Boats, Books & Brushes with Taste Festival
Brings Tom Brokaw, AVI, and More Together For Discussions, Book Signings, and Other Literary Activities on the Waterfront
Law & Justice In Everyday Life At Three Venues


NEW LONDON, Conn. - Whether its remembering the words to silly songs about the bathtub with Alan Katz or reflecting on the values of the American heartland with Tom Brokaw, children and adults alike will find a number of
literary activities awaiting them at the 2003 Boats Books & Brushes with Taste Festival (BBB), September 5-7, 2003. This three-year-old festival brings the literary and arts worlds to life on the New London Waterfront, with U.S. Coast Guard Barque EAGLE and other Tall ShipsŪ providing a magnificent backdrop.

BBB is proud to present more than 80 authors hosting book discussions, signings, and other literary activities on Saturday and Sunday. Featured authors include:

Tom Brokaw: Award-winning television anchor and author of The Greatest Generation, The Greatest Generation Speaks, and his new memoir on growing up in the American Heartland, A Long Way From Home. Brokaw will speak at the Garde Arts Center on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are available for $15 at the Garde Arts Center Box Office.

Rick Bragg, Pultizer Prize winning journalist and author of All Over But The Shoutin and Avas Man.

Peter Benchley: Author of the bestseller Jaws and his newest book, Shark Trouble. Get ready for this exciting event by joining the crew of USCG Barque EAGLE on Friday evening for a twilight film showing of Jaws at Fear on the Pier!

Andy Thibault: Author of Law & Justice In Everyday Life.  A columnist for Law Tribune newspapers and an assignment editor for Fox 61 TV News, Thibault manages the IMPAC/Connecticut State University Young Writers program and teaches journalism at the University of Hartford. Law & Justice In Everyday Life will be available from Curbstone Press, the Connecticut Poetry Festival Bookstore and at the Connecticut Authors and Publishers
Association tent.

Avi: Author of more than 50 books for young people and recipient of several major writing awards, including two Newbery Honors and the 2003 Newbery Medal for Crispin: The Cross of Lead.

Joanna Cole and Bruce Degen: Author and illustrator, respectively, of the wildly successful Magic School BusŪ series featuring the effervescent Ms. Frizzle.

BBB will also welcome Scholastics The Traveling Magic School BusŪ the entire festival weekend, where children can meet Ms. Frizzle in person and explore the scientific world with hands-on games, workshops and exhibits.

Maritime enthusiasts can participate in several nautical activities, including a lighted boat parade on Friday and the 4th Annual New London Schooner Challenge. Tall ShipsŪ and schooner captains will be on hand to educate visitors during free public tours. Maritime exhibitors and educators will provide visitors with a glimpse of maritime heritage on
Amistad Pier.

Along with authors, artists, and sailors, BBBs Taste segment offers sample-size portions of signature dishes from many of Connecticuts finest restaurants, while celebrity chefs and cookbook authors will demonstrate their talents on the Dacor cooking stage. Beer gardens, wine tastings, and multi-stage entertainment will make this one of the most enjoyable weekends of the year.
